Saviour

“My spirit rejoices in God my Saviour!” (Luke 1:47)

Some years ago, a group of ad writers were asked to describe why a new bath soap was better than its competitors with one writer submitting the following:

“The alkaline elements and vegetable fats in this product are blended in such a way as to secure the highest quality of saponification alone, with a specific gravity that keeps it on top of the water, relieving the bather of the trouble and annoyance of fishing around for it in the bottom during his ablutions.”

Upon reading it, the manager in charge crossed it all out in red and wrote just two words: “It floats!”

So much can be conveyed in a few words, and this is the case when Mary declares she is rejoicing in God, “my Saviour.”

“My Saviour” – so much meaning is expressed in these two words!

For one, it emphasizes that Mary understands she will give birth to the Messiah. Thousands of years of promises and waiting for their fulfillment are over. The time has arrived for God’s Chosen One – Jesus the Messiah – to be born and deliver His people.

These two words also remind us that we’re all sinners and we need saving – we need a Rescuer, a Saviour, because we cannot save ourselves. Notice how Mary calls God, “my Saviour”? Mary knew she also needed to be rescued from her sin and only God could bring this about.

It doesn’t matter if we’re “good” or “bad” - or even the mother of the Messiah – we’re all in the same position before God. We’re cut off from God because of our sin, and we need a Saviour.

“My Saviour.”

Two words which convey such a powerful message.

The question is an obvious one – is He your Saviour?

Mary rejoiced in God “my Saviour.” Can you call Jesus, “My Saviour”?
