Passage: John 14:4-6

It’s not a popular thing to say, “There is only one way to Heaven!” Post the idea up on social media and you will be vilified as arrogant, intolerant, and narrow-minded, along with that worst of all contemporary sins – inciting hate-speech.

Based on what Jesus told His disciples in John 14:6, He is guilty of all the above!

Not only did Jesus state there is only one way to Heaven, He made it dependent on Himself, claiming He is the way to God.

Let’s be clear about what Jesus said.

He is the way to God; He reveals the truth to us about God and He is the only way we can access the spiritual life God offers freely to everyone.

In practical terms, this means that all other spiritual pathways and faiths are dead ends – they will not lead you to God, spiritual life, or Heaven.

People struggle mightily with accepting this idea today. You might be struggling with it as you are reading this.

But struggling with it doesn’t make it any less true.

My wife, Karen, once described how crucial it can be to follow only one way – it can have life or death consequences.

Imagine you are lost in dense jungle and if you don’t find your way out, you will die. As you roam around looking for an escape route, you come across many paths, raising your hopes one of them will lead to freedom. But time and time again, you discover each new path only leads you deeper into the jungle and you become even more hopelessly lost.

Until you find a map which tells you to ignore the other paths and follow the route marked out on it – it and it alone is the path to freedom!

And it’s signed by “A reliable and trustworthy guide who has already travelled the path for you.”

You follow it and sure enough, you quickly step into freedom and life!

You would be crazy to ignore the advice, wouldn’t you?

It’s the same with spiritual matters – we are crazy to ignore the advice Jesus has given us.

Why can I say this?

Because through His death and resurrection, He has already travelled the road to Heaven for us – all other roads are dead ends.

What do you think about Jesus’ claim to being the only way to God and to Heaven?
