Revelation 1:17-18
The Living One
As I write this, Australia is reeling from the massacre of innocent Jewish people at Bondi last Sunday 14 December. It’s an act of pure evil and graphically illustrates the darkness that lurks in both our world and our hearts.
It is this darkness that Jesus came into the world to confront and defeat.
The third name given to Jesus in John’s vision – the Living One – reminds us of Who He is and what He came to do.
As the Living One, Jesus is the Eternal, uncreated God Who gives light and life to all things.
And as the Living One, He is also God Who took on human form, died on the cross for the sin of the whole world, then rose physically from the dead on the third day and now holds “the keys of death and Hades.”
In the Person and work of Jesus, the darkness of sin, evil, hatred and death were dealt a death blow and everyone who now turns to Him in repentance and faith steps into His light and life.
We must all face the fact that the darkness that motivated the Bondi massacre also exists in our hearts. The darkness that leads us to hate others and worst of all, reject Jesus and His offer of forgiveness from sin.
But when we confront the darkness, the light of His life floods our souls and enables us to shine His light to others, encouraging them to leave the darkness as well.
The baby in the manger – Jesus – is the Saviour of the world, and it’s undisputed Lord, having been given by His Father, “the Name that is above all names.”
“The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness can never extinguish it.”
This Christmas, step out of the darkness and into the Light and life of the baby in the manger, Jesus.
