Read John 1:1

Word

It’s estimated there are over 200 names or titles referring to Jesus in the Bible, each one telling us something about His character, attributes or mission.

In the opening paragraph of his Gospel, John gives us four of them and he begins by calling Jesus “the Word.”

What is “the Word?”

The “Word” is the English translation of the Greek term “Logos” and among the Greeks this described the thought that lay behind any given word. The Logos eventually came to mean the intelligence or Supreme Power that created the Universe but significantly, it wasn’t possible for anyone to have a relationship with this Supreme Power.

So why did John use this word – Logos – to describe Jesus?

Notice that John says three important things about “the Word.”

At the beginning of everything, the Word was there, at the very heart of the Universe.

The Word was also “with God.” A better way to understand this is to say the Word was “face to face with God” – He was in direct, close, relationship with Him.

But more than that, the Word “was God.” That is, He (Jesus) was (is) continually God!

John describes Jesus as the Word because He wants us to understand Who Jesus truly is and the nature of the Universe we live in.

As the Word, Jesus took an active part in the creation of the world and us, but He is also relational.

He is not just a “Supreme Power” that isn’t interested in His creation – He is the Creator God and everyone of us can know Him personally!

No matter what your circumstance is right now, there is a God Who knows you and loves you, and His name is Jesus.

Why don’t you reach out to Him now and ask Him to step into your life and change it?
