Read Isaiah 9:6-7
Prince of Peace
Anxiety has become a major topic for discussion over the past 5 years, and it’s ranked as the number one mental health problem in the world today.
I don’t want to minimize any person’s struggle with anxiety, but I think this is a problem people have been afflicted with since the beginning of time.
This observation is acknowledged in a famous quote by the First Century Philosopher, Epictetus who said:
“While the Emperor may give peace from war on land and sea, he is unable to give peace from passion, grief and envy. He cannot give peace of heart, for which people yearn more than even for outward peace.”
The famous Pax Romana had brought peace from war to the Empire, but human hearts remained trapped in anxiety and fear.
The name “Prince of Peace” which Isaiah uses for Jesus is an interesting one because it combines the two ideas of reigning and restoring. As Prince, Jesus will reign over the whole world, bringing God’s righteousness with it.
But He also brings God’s peace. Peace is much more than the absence of war. God’s peace brings wholeness, unity, completeness and fulfillment to a broken world and broken lives.
We hear a lot about people being anxious and fearful these days, and let’s be honest, there is plenty to be worried about. But the Bible has some great advice about what to do with our worries – take them to God!
What are you anxious about right now?
The cost of living? An illness? The state of the world? A longing to be at peace with God but you don’t know how to go about it?
Bring your anxieties to Jesus, the Prince of Peace, and let His light and peace shine into your heart today!
