Read Isaiah 9:5-6

Mighty God

When people hear the name Jesus, the picture they often have is of a guy in a long white robe with a kind smile on His face, gently carrying a lamb under each arm.

Very few would have in mind a soldier, strapping on a sword and preparing to march into battle; but the Bible certainly encourages us to think this way about Jesus!

Isaiah called Jesus “Mighty God”, and it emphasizes again He is God come in human form. “Mighty” often referred to mighty men of courage – men like King David – who were warriors and noblemen and were celebrated and praised as champions. When we apply this to Jesus the Man, we are to think of Him as God’s mighty warrior Who came to fight against sin and death!

Isaiah also calls Him “God” identifying Him as the true, personal God Who saves us.

Our rescue from sin required a champion and a warrior – Jesus the Mighty God – Who stared down the enemies of death and sin as the following song so powerfully captures:

“O God, Most High, Almighty King,
The Champion of Heaven, Lord of Everything.

You Fought, You Won, Death Lost Its Sting.
And Standing in Your Victory We Sing!

You Have Broken the Chains
That Held Our Captive Souls,
You Have Broken the Chains
And Used Them on Your Foes.

All Your Enemies Are Bound,
They Tremble at the Sound of Your Name.
Jesus, You Have Broken the Chains.

The Power of Hell Has Been Undone,
Captivity Held Captive by the Risen One;

And In the Name of God’s Great Son,
We Thank You for the Victory You’ve Won!

You Have Broken the Chains…”

Jesus, our Mighty God, didn’t just defeat sin and death – He annihilated them!
