Read Luke 2:11-14

Lord

Of the many superhero T-shirts I own – and I have quite a few – my favourite is the one of Superman on bended knee, head bowed reverently along with the statement, “He who kneels before God can stand before anyone.”

Superman is the greatest and most powerful superhero of them all, but he is wise and humble enough to know there is One Who’s greater than him.

And that Person is Jesus.

When the angel calls Jesus “Lord”, he uses it in a very particular way. The Greek version of the Old Testament used Lord to translate the Hebrew Yahweh, “I AM WHAT I AM.” In other words, Lord refers to the Living God, and it’s also used this way throughout the New Testament.

It’s unmistakably clear that by calling the baby in the manger Lord, he’s saying “He is the Living God!” The authors of the NT constantly emphasise Jesus isn’t just fully human, He’s also fully God, and this makes Him Lord, King, and Creator of the Universe.

And He’s the Lord of you and me.

The Apostle Paul wrote “that at the name of Jesus, every knee should bow and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord” but he makes it very clear elsewhere that God respects our right to choose or reject submitting ourselves to His Lordship over our lives.

But be warned. Should you reject bowing before Jesus as Lord in this life, in the next one you will be forced to bow, and it will have dire consequences. Everyone who rejects Jesus as Lord now will understand then He is truly the Lord of life and death, but it will be too late to change their eternal destiny.

You don’t have to be Superman to bow before Jesus, you just have to be humble enough.
