Reading: Revelation 5:1-14

“The Lion has won the victory.” (Revelation 5:5)

In dedicating The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe to his Goddaughter, Lucy Barfield, C. S. Lewis stated:
I wrote this story for you, but girls grow quicker than books…you are already too old for fairy tales. But some day you will be old enough to start reading fairy tales again…

Who doesn’t enjoy a good fairy tale?
In fairy tales, frogs turn into princes, scullery maids become princesses, pumpkins are transformed into beautiful carriages and wrong is made right.
And they always end well because everyone lives happily ever after!

It’s been suggested the reason we love fairy tales so much is because they tap into the longing we all have for a world where people become the best version of themselves, and where life is a wonderful adventure.
Fairy tales appeal for the simple reason they offer a vison of life as it could be, a vision very different to our experience of real life.
Real life has many moments of joy, happiness, love, and laughter but it also has its fair share of disappointment and sadness.
A fairy tale offers us the chance to escape the tough times of everyday life.
However, as we grow older, we tend to become more negative about life. One let down or hurt after another leaves us filled with disappointment and even fairy tales lose their attraction.
Ever caught yourself saying something like, “Life isn’t a fairy tale, you know!”
Allow me to make a simple suggestion:
What if fairy tales are pointers to a story where life is deeply fulfilling, and bad things are put right – a story which is true in every way?
I’m so glad you have decided to join us as we look at the magical world of Narnia and discover what it reveals to us about the real Christmas story – the story of Jesus.
This Christmas – dare to believe!
