What was the main message Jesus wanted to convey to His followers when He spoke about the future?
It seems to me it was “trust Me” and He does this by using a word four times that can be translated “but see” which means carefully contemplating the things that are unfolding before you. The significance of this word is highlighted in the different expressions used throughout the chapter to translate it:
“See to it…” (v5)
“But be on your guard…” (v9)
“But take heed…” (v23)
“Take heed…” (v33)
Considering His return to the earth, what does Jesus want us to “take heed” of?
Firstly, He warns us not to be misled by claims of “Jesus is here/I am Jesus”; wars breaking out, or an increase in earthquakes or famines. (see vv5-8). These are just “birth pangs” says Jesus, “but it isn’t the end!”
“Trust Me!”
Secondly, being persecuted for being His followers is a given, so “be on guard” and don’t be worried, because He will be with us and speak through us! (vv9-13)
“Trust Me!”
Thirdly, there will come a time of great tribulation and difficult days when phony Christs appear. (vv14-23) But we can be ready for this because Jesus has given us advance warning.
“Trust Me!”
Finally, not knowing the timing of Christ’s return encourages us to be alert, faithful servants, who expect Him to return at any moment. (vv24-37)
“Trust Me!”
I mentioned a few days back I’ve met Christians who are fearful because of what they see happening in the world around them at present. The instability of the world should not drive us to fear, but faith!
In Mark 13 Jesus reminds us that everything is under His control. There is nothing happening now – or in the future – that will take Him by surprise and therefore, as one author said, “God will not remove uncertainty, but He will take the worry out of it.”
Trust Him!
